What it is

Discourse markers (marcadores del discurso) are the words and phrases that tell the listener how the next idea relates to the last one: it adds to it (además, incluso), goes against what you expected (sin embargo, no obstante), compares (en cambio, mientras que), changes the subject (por cierto), corrects (mejor dicho) or wraps up (en definitiva). They don't change the facts, but they guide the reader, and they are what makes an essay sound organised and a conversation sound fluent.

How it works

Most markers are fixed expressions: they never change form, and they are set off with commas. At the start of a sentence, a comma follows: Por cierto, ¿viste a Laura? Between two clauses, put a semicolon or a full stop before and a comma after: El plan es bueno; sin embargo, es caro. Inside a clause, they go between commas: Yo, en cambio, prefiero el campo. Mientras que is the exception: it is a conjunction that links two clauses directly (Ella vive en Lima, mientras que su hermano vive en Quito).

When to use it

  • Sin embargo vs no obstante. Both introduce something unexpected after the first idea. No obstante is more formal: reports, emails, essays.

  • En cuanto a / respecto a announce the topic of the next point, especially in emails and meetings.

Contrasts and traps

  • En cambio is not concessive. ✗ Llovía; en cambio, salimos → Llovía; sin embargo, salimos. Use en cambio only when two things are compared.
  • Sin embargo doesn't take que. ✗ sin embargo de que → a pesar de que.
  • No solo… sino. After no solo, use sino (or sino que before a verb), not ✗ pero también.
  • Punctuation. ✗ El plan es bueno sin embargo es caro → El plan es bueno; sin embargo, es caro.
  • Register. No obstante, asimismo and en relación con belong in writing; o sea, igual and total belong in conversation.
  • A propósito also means "on purpose": Lo hizo a propósito. At the start of a sentence, followed by a comma, it means "by the way".

If you speak Portuguese

Several markers look familiar but don't match. Portuguese inclusive ("even") is Spanish incluso: in Spanish, inclusive means "including". Aliás has no single partner: por cierto for "by the way", mejor dicho for "or rather", además for "besides". No entanto is sin embargo, and enfim is not en fin: "at last" is por fin.
